Because of their rarity and beauty, orchids hold a special fascination for all naturalists. In North Cyprus, the orchid flora consists of 32 confirmed species, subspecies and varieties. Some species will be familiar to botanists from north-western Europe, such as pyramidal orchid and autumn lady’s tresses, but there are also more exotic species including violet limodore, tongue-flowered serapias, naked man orchid and more. |
The Climate of North Cyprus is a typical Mediterranean Climate. Summers (June to September) are hot and dry, winters (November to March) are usually rainy with a mild temperature. Spring and autumn are warm and pleasant. The average annual temperature is 20°C (68 F). Summer temperatures average 30°C (90F) with the coldest months of January and February 10°C (50F). |
Quite apart from the huge range of cultivated flowers, North Cyprus and especially the Karpaz Peninsula is a rich botanical area with literally hundreds of species of wild flowers from crown anemones and pink rock roses to purple iris and yellow crowfoot. From February to June many areas of Northern Cyprus are carpeted with colourful wild flowers. The birds and the butterflies also are glorious, lizards abound, and the loggerhead and green turtle still come ashore to lay their eggs in North Cyprus’s unspoiled beaches. |
